I wasn't sure I was hearing correctly when I heard the guest discussing "miracle fruit". Apparently, in the '60s and early '70s there was a growing market for this, originally West African now Floridian, fruit (synsepalum dulcificum) that delivered just what it claimed. The miracle was that when you bite it and swish this bright red, oval-shaped berry, anything you ate for the next half-hour to hour tasted sweet. I heard this today on Democracy Now where the hostess, Amy Goodman, was given a taste and then a lime. To her, the lime tasted like an extremely sweet orange.So why haven't you heard of this? And where can you get it? It's time to talk about conspiracy, one that includes our beloved FDA as well as big industry. The promoter of this fruit subsequently synthesized a pill form that contained the equivalent protein active ingredient, oddly named miraculin. But guess what folks, this competed with the sugar industry as well as the artificial sweetener market. It's interesting that Rumsfeld was able to get an FDA guy to approve Aspartame quickly. Later that FDA guy became his head of PR at the company that produced Aspartame (or some other company he was affiliated with).
A very different story emerged for the owner of the miracle fruit pills. Industry spies raided his office, he was followed and the FDA just decided to shut him down completely in 1974. Imagine what this fruit and its active ingredient would do to the sweetener market! Also imagine what it could do for diabetics and all of us trying to keep the weight down but don't want chemical (as opposed to naturally occurring substance). For those whose palettes are damaged by chemotherapy where everything tastes like tin, sweet taste can be achieved again.
